Chinese Hair Cut!

June 26, 2012 in Beijing Interns, Uncategorized

Having never been to Asia I was pretty skeptical of many things based on some pretty unfair generalizations, one of them was definitively getting a hair cut. However I was totally wrong on one of my BS generalizations again! There is a place located next to the April Gourmet that does a fine job for a very reasonable price (male cut 60 RMB). They start off giving you an amazing head massage to clean you up for the actual barber and then the process begins. Speaking very little Mandarin I was actually able to get a pretty descent cuts and would definitively come back again.

Tears in Heaven Beer Market!

June 25, 2012 in Food, Markets

In Beijing there are very few place that sell imported beer, which is a PROBLEM! However I recently stumbled into a little market that sells a very respected array of micro brew beers, spirits, tobacco, and even hookah. This little hole in the wall market is located in Sanlitun and is considered to be a local secret. The atmosphere is very relaxed, if you want to hangout and drink some beer your welcomed to sit at one of the few tables or  you can just grab a couple roadies. I highly recommend stop in and check their selection out!

Coffee in China “Shangrila Farm”

June 21, 2012 in Beijing Shopping, Food, Health

Being from Seattle, Washington one of the hardest adjustments when coming to China wasn’t getting on a subway with hundreds of people, it wasn’t trying to learn the Mandarin language, it was trying to find a decent cup of coffee. As bad as it sounds my days where becoming less and less efficient without my daily cup of coffee and then out nowhere I was introduced to an intern from Shangrila Farms.

Also being from the states he totally understood where I was coming from and told me that the company he is interning for makes a line of organic coffee that is quite up to par. Shangrila Farm’s you are my light in the Darknessssss!

“Shangrila Farms want to bring the concept of an organic and healthy life style to people in China. This is the dream that started Shangrila Farms.”

Buying DVD’s in Beijing

June 19, 2012 in Beijing Interns, Markets

Last week we went to a DVD shop to pick up some movies, so we had something to watch on our down time while visiting Beijing. DVD shops are a dime a dozen in the city, you can literally walk down any relatively crowded street and you’ll see at least two them. The shops are very up to date in their selections and sell at a very reasonable in prices (10-15 rmb depending on the quality). Though these movies are copies, the quality of them are nearly exact to the originals. I strongly recommend finding one of these shops if your a big movie connoisseur or just enjoy an occasional flick….

This DVD shop is located in the central part of the Sanlitun Mall; in the alley right outside the nigh clubs!

Weekday Casual Night/ Buying a Hookah

June 18, 2012 in Beijing Interns, Food, Uncategorized

Last week 4 of us got together after work and casually hung out… The evening started out with us relaxing on the 26 floor of a friend’s balcony with some Moroccan pastries and a bottle of French wine. I personally would have been completely content with not moving for the rest of the night, but the rest of the guys insisted on heading into town and purchasing a hookah.
Though the Middle Eastern culture is present in Beijing, most of them aren’t the ones selling the hookah. We spent about an hour trying to find a decent hookah for a fair price, making the point that in China you never should buy the first item you see…. because about 10-15 other vendors will be selling the exact same ones for different prices. After shopping around for a bit we finally made a move on one for about 180 rmb, which was bargain down from its original price of 430 rmb.
When we got back to the flat, our Moroccan friend prepared the hookah and some Middle Eastern food to snack on while we smoked the night away.

Intro Music Festival in Beijing 2012

June 14, 2012 in Events

The 3rd annual Intro festival was held last month. The venue this year was not as good as it’s predecessors, but it was still a good time. This years venue took place at a run down carnival area about an one hour outside of Beijing. The beginning of the music festival was a little slow, but as more and more people arrive the party became quite awesome.

Our day started as made our trek from Dongzhimen to the local April Gourmet so that we could stock up on drinks & food for our journey to the venue.  Since we had a pretty large group this year, we  had to take a couple of taxis over to the 798 art district and then transfer onto a bus. For some reason the venue was changed at the last minute, which I was kind of bummed about because the original Intro Festival Venue was pretty awesome. After about a 45 minute bus ride, we arrived at the festival. It was pretty empty in the beginning of the party because I think people were kind of confused of the last minutes changes that were made.

At around 5:00pm the venue was packed full of people. It was a pretty awesome party minus the limit on alcohol being served. For some reason it was impossible to buy any beer or drinks. They were limited the consumption that took place this year. Good thing I was prepared!

As the night developed, there was an awesome light show that took place. We ended up leaving early because we ran out of drinks and everybody got kind of bored.

I would highly recommend anyone going to the party next year to be 100% prepared before arriving!

One Thousand and One Nights

June 13, 2012 in Food

There is a very good restaurant in Sanlitun district called One Thousand And One Nights. They offer a wide variety of oriental food such as humus , grilled meat , and other premium dishes. The vibe  at One Thousand And One Nights is very relaxing . Through out the meal  they play soft arabic music , and have bellydancers setting the mood. To top it off they offer a  large selection of wines from different countries; France , Chile, California.

When the meal was winding down we ordered a hookah and hung out for a bit, it was the best Shisha I’ve smoked in Beijing so far. Drinking wine and smoking hookah on the terrace was an end to a fantastic night.

Smoke hookah for 68 RMB

Dinner for no more than 100 RMB.

Barbecue Pékinois : Un vrai délice!

June 12, 2012 in Food

Hiking outside of Beijing

June 11, 2012 in Beijing Interns, Uncategorized

Sometimes you just need to get out of the city! Last week some friends and I went a couple of hours outside the city to go on a day hike. We packed a lunch and headed out on the 980 bus to a hike called Heilong Guan “The Black Dragon”. Legend has it that a black dragon was stuck between two boulders and was freed by striking the boulders with his claws, to slice them in half.
